Dear Rep XXX,
I am concerned that there are HHS mandates that require institutions of faith (i.e. Catholic) to implement policies that clearly violate conscience as a matter of law. I thought that the legislative branch was the branch of government that passes/makes law (not HHS). Therefore, I have three questions:
1) How can a mandate have the same weight as a law?
2) Is it possible that the government could require a Jewish organization to purchase pork, a Muslim organization to provide funding for Beer/Alcohol purchases, and a Hindu organization to buy beef? If not, how can the Department of Health and Human Services require a Catholic institution to fund abortion inducing drugs and/or contraception which are contrary to Catholic teaching?
3) How do you stand on this issue and what efforts have you taken to ensure that this mandate is repealed? – Which is contradictory, how can something be repealed if it is not a law?
I am not being glib, I am seriously asking these questions because I truly do not know. A serious reply to these questions is certainly appreciated.

[Editiorial Note:] Regardless of how one may feel about this issue, if my faith teaches me that wearing green tennis shoes is immoral, I do not believe that I should be compelled *by edict, or law* to buy them. Nor should I be required to create and fund a method to allow others to buy them. That is what the first amendment protects.

Recordmonsters.com takes vinyl records (45s and 33s) and uses a laser to cut them into a puzzle. Assemble the pieces and you have an ant, dinosaur or whatever happens to be a good idea at the time. You can see a short video if you go to their kickstarter page (link is on their site). Since they are starting-up, you have the ability to help fund their project from the beginning. Give 25 bucks and you’ll get a puzzle in the mail.

Robot Book (at the beach)

I went to the beach this summer, and in the back of a store there was an old bookcase with used books for sale. I found a 300 page paperback full of robot stories for 50 cents. In the introduction I read this….

Ironically, considering Asimov’s famous first law of Robotic’s. “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm” — The most technically sophisticated robots developed to date are designed specifically for the task of killing people. Cruise missiles, smart bombs and (unmanned drones – my addition, ed.)

This got me thinking about a scenario where Robots would actually obey the 3 laws of robotics. Imagine a world where robot drones actually obeyed those laws, and even protected life. Would it work? Here is an MP3 story about drones (Watchbirds) that prevent crimes, murder and robbery. Watchbirds seem to be very efficient at preventing crime and helping humanity. The story was broadcast in 1953 as they saw the future.

Legitimate artists and animation professionals will really appreciate the time and effort that went into creating this wonderful stop-motion animation.

Even if you aren’t an artist, the doodles and weird creatures that are created out of thin air are inspiring.

It’s hard to explain in a single snapshot of what is actually transpiring here. You have to watch the video to understand.

USS Makin Island – Now Official (and green)

Recently, the U.S. Navy comissioned a new ship, the USS Makin Island . Her official commissioning ceremony took place on 24 October 2009 at Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado near San Diego. My grandfather was present, being one of 6 USMC vetrans who attended.

He was also given the honor of passing the spy-glass to the new vessel.

“We’re like a big hybrid car,” Kopas, who lives in San Diego, said as the ship neared the coastline. “I love it.”

The Navy predicts it will save $250 million in fuel costs over the life of the ship. Some analysts foresee the Makin Island heralding a shift to a fuel-efficient, all-electric fleet.

“It’s a watershed for the Navy,” said Scott Truver, an independent naval analyst based in Washington, D.C. “It’s a generational change.”

Makin Island is the first Navy vessel to combine gas turbines with auxiliary motors that run off the ship’s electrical grid. Source (here)
